Le brouillard se faisait de plus en plus épais. En mouvement, du fond de la vallée vers les cimes, à caresser les flans de collines. Ainsi, l’hostilité venait compléter le tableau déjà aride de ces montagnes du nord Vietnam. Il faut marcher, suivre ces chemins tortueux, pour surprendre la vie. Assis sur un rocher à écouter - puisque le brouillard m’empêchait d’admirer – j’ai vécu une douce surprise. La vie était bien là. Partout. J’entendais un bébé pleurer, les coups réguliers d’une sarcle dans la terre, des enfants crier plus bas, et ce petit cours d’eau coincé au creux d’un circuit d’irrigation. C’est plus tard, que j’aperçus les premières silhouettes, celle d’une femme au panier bien chargé dans le dos et d’enfants descendant le chemin à pied. Des terres cultivées dans des conditions d’équilibriste. Ici, la terre plonge si cruellement que ni la charrue, ni le buffle ne peuvent venir en aide au paysan montagnard. Seules, l’obstination et la fierté doivent encourager ce peuple Hmong à résister contre la rudesse du temps et de l’espace. Plus haut dans les volutes de ce brouillard toujours pas décidé à nous lâcher, nous arrivons chez les Dao rouges. Autre ethnie, autre couleur. Un fichu rouge sur la tête des femmes les distingue de toutes les autres ethnies. Plus les femmes sont vieilles plus le fichu me semble épais…sans doute le poids des ans et des responsabilités ? La veille, nous étions au cœur d’une autre vallée. Les rizières en escaliers nous invitaient à monter toujours plus haut, toujours plus loin dans la culture Hmong. J’avais pris le temps de redescendre à pied le chemin sur lequel plus tôt j’avais croisé une vieille femme à panier. Elle n’avait de sombre que les couleurs de ses habits traditionnels. Ses yeux et sa voix étaient d’un éclat magnifique. Je suis venu lui dire que je voulais l’accompagner, l’aider à surmonter la raideur de sa route, de sa vie. Elle a souri et nous avons parlé ; elle surtout. En chemin, j’ai compris qu’elle revenait de Sapa, la ville à une journée d’ici, à pied. Qu’elle vendait les tissus brodés et fabriqués chez elle. Elle me tenait la main pour me parler de ses enfants et moi des miens. Je lui ai présenté ma petite famille de globe-trotters et d’un geste chaleureux, la vieille dame nous a invités chez elle. Dans l’intimité de sa cabane en bois, éclairée d’une ampoule aussi anachronique que la petite télévision cachée sous je ne sais trop quoi, j’ai surpris à nouveau la vie. Le feu creusé dans la terre et protégé d’un plafond de bois noircis par les soirées d’hiver, la vaisselle empilée sur quelques planches, un recoin accueillant un lit de planches comme unique droit au repos. La vie est là. Pas de doute. Depuis des mois autour du monde, j’avais remarqué que le rudimentaire n’empêchait pas l’ingéniosité. Des maisons au confort très modeste recelaient parfois de vraies qualités architecturales avec le souci d’une vie plus pratique. Ici, rien de tout cela. La magie était ailleurs. La magie était cette femme increvable. J’aime ces vieilles femmes du monde. Elles sont la force et le témoin de ces ethnies qui luttent pour ne pas disparaître. Mes enfants reviendront-ils peut-être un jour dans ces montagnes du nord Vietnam. Les choses auront changé. Le brouillard aura été balayé par la force des vents. Et les quelques motos chinoises auront peut-être laissé place à des rubans de bitumes et de voitures. Ainsi avec le temps et l’évolution des modes de déplacement, ces peuples et ces cultures dites minoritaires, devenus si accessibles, seront-ils appelés à se fondre dans le brouillard d’une mondialisation culturelle. Mais finalement, au nom de quoi, moi, aurais-je le droit de les empêcher ? De les juger ? J’espère seulement que mes enfants pourront à nouveau rencontrer cette vieille femme Hmong increvable.
